Couple Rescues 8 Dogs And Builds Supersize Bed To Keep Them Comfy
The Hugheses have eight dogs of their own, and each one of them sleeps on the same human bed as Chris and Mariesa.
The normal-sized bed just couldn’t accommodate all eight of these huge dogs, all of them older dogs themselves.
The happy couple finally got an idea. They hired a furniture maker, Mike Ford, to custom-make a larger bed that could fit all ten members of the family.
Ford, who is a dog lover himself, designed a bed frame that holds a king-sized bed on one end, and then a full-sized bed turned sideways at the foot of the king-sized bed.
The entire bed is 14 feet long and 7 feet wide. By comparison, an normal king bed is 6.6 feet long and 6 feet wide.
The heavy-duty headboard is 6 feet tall, so it can take any knocks and rough-housing from the dogs. The beauty of this bed is the stairwell at the end. Senior dogs can’t jump very well, so Ford built a set of six steps with a little railing at the landing so everyone can climb into bed.
The funniest thing is that every dog has a favorite sleeping position. Some cuddle up next to Chris or Mariesa, while others sleep stretched out at the end of the bed. Gremlin, a senior pit bulls, loves to have her head on a pillow. Sam, another pit bull, gets under the covers and keeps everyone warm. Meatball sleeps up against Chris. Money, a greyhound, does a lot of kicking with his legs. Mabel, the chihuahua, sleeps on the floor because the larger dogs make things too crowded for her.
or the first time in six months, the Hugheses can sleep comfortably thanks to a long-awaited project from a dog-lovin’ furniture maker and some ingenious wooden engineering.
